The Roman rider began his riding career in 1991 making his debut in the MotoGP world championship in the 250 class where he won 4 world championships.
After moving to the Superbike world championship in 2007, he won two world championships, as the first Italian in the history of production-based derivatives in 2010 and in 2012, the year of his retirement from racing. In the 2017 and 2018 seasons he made his debut as team manager in the CIV (Italian Speed Championship) with the Max Racing Team.
With the same team since 2019 he has participated in the world championship in the Moto3 class.
